Kerntalenten en competitieI regularly notice that beliefs and judgments stop people from doing what naturally suits them give them pleasure and energy. Beliefs and judgments that are inspired by upbringing, the social environment, or sometimes by a single remark made, for example, by a teacher at school. Things that people have come to believe in and that even concern their own talents, qualities, and competencies. An example is competitiveness.

When I tell the outcome related to the strong coretalents "Competition," it is common for the recipient to shrug her/his shoulders apologetically and say:

"Yes, sorry that is indeed how I am and I am not proud of that."

Or the other client, who said:

"Well I know, I'm doing my best now to unlearn it."

Dear reader, if competition with others and yourself challenges, motivates and drives you, then that is a strength that the organization you work for can take advantage of.

With your strong performance drive and goal and result orientation, you go all out to achieve the end goal/result. Like a pit bull, you bite down and go straight for that end goal, driven and focused. You persevere and don't let go. Maybe you also want to win, or performing is more important and fun for you than going for the win.

Perhaps when you are delightfully in that flow, you are less approachable and accessible to those around you. This makes sense, because it keeps you focused and your end point in sight. You are busy contributing an important stone to the achievement and improvement of business results, for example.

You are the top athlete in the company!

Managers and colleagues, take good care of this top athlete. They will take you far and beyond, but they need some protection from themselves. Entice them to go out to lunch, for example. Please turn on the alarm at 6 p.m., so they do have to go home (even though there is a good chance they will continue at home). Take them for a walk. Because taking rest in time, getting enough sleep, eating, and drinking regularly often fall by the wayside.

In short, recognize, acknowledge and embrace talent of yourself and others

AND pay attention to the side effects!
